Bergamo
Bergamo, also known as the City of a Thousand and with two faces.
Bergamo - The Lower Town
The fusion of these two wonderful identities is Bergamo, one of the Jewels Of Italy also praised by many poets.
The etymology of the name Bergamo would derive from the Germanic Berg-Heim, mountain dwelling, in deference to the alleged Cenomanian origin of the settlement but it is preferred to think of a derivation of the name from the eastern Mediterranean linguistic area. Toponyms such as Praga, Parga, Barga, Pergamum, Bergamo would all derive from the Akkadian parakkum, high place in the temple, cell, sanctuary.
Bergamo - The Upper Town
Walking along the nearby central streets of Bergamo, the eye is immediately drawn to the majestic city walls, dating back to the Serenissima period, that enclose the ancient heart of the city: upper Bergamo, a splendid treasure trove of architectural masterpieces, historic mansions and thousand-year-old churches whose beauty has managed to enchant visitors for centuries.
The charm of the medieval era can be discovered in Piazza Vecchia with the Palazzo della Ragione and the Campanone Tower, a privileged vantage point over the city. Also not to be forgotten is the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore with its magnificent frescoes and the Renaissance masterpiece of the Colleoni Chapel. Getting lost in a crisscross of alleys and narrow streets, one comes across characteristic squares until popping up on the fortified outpost of the Rocca.
Those in the mood for retro-flavored shopping will appreciate the many stores, especially of specialty confectionery and gastronomy, art exhibitions, and small stores of goldsmiths and antique dealers.
Fascinating sights can also be found in the more modern Lower Town: the Donizetti Theater, the Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, and one of Italy’s most famous picture galleries-the Accademia Carrara.
Shopping
In Bergamo it is impossible not to be tempted by the pleasures of shopping that can satisfy all desires. We are only a 5-minute walk from the pedestrian area dedicated to shopping.
Via XX Settembre, Via Tiraboschi, the Sentierone, and Via Torquato Tasso make up a sort of fashion quadrilateral with boutiques and stores of historical significance that can offer large and small brands and the kindness and expertise of those who know how to advise customers at their best. Don’t miss a walk in the historic Piazza Pontida bounded by its characteristic 15th-century arcades and in the ancient Borgo Santa Caterina a small neighborhood in the city. Food and wine
Bergamasca is a land rich in varied and tasty gastronomic products: from polenta, classic or taragna (topped with the excellent cheeses of our dairy tradition), to the wild game and stews that accompany it. From sweet to cheeses, from olive oil to wine. The culinary offerings satisfy every palate and never leave you unsatisfied. The classic Bergamo Primi piatti are “Casonsèi de la bergamasca” and “Scarpinocc de Par” prepared with fresh pasta and meat filling. These products originating in popular cuisine tell us about the area from which they come and are examples of local history and culture.
The Wines
Valcalepio is a part of the hilly area between the Cherio and Oglio rivers, in the province of Bergamo, of considerable landscape and cultural interest. The name “Calepio” is said to derive from the Greek word “Kalos-Espias,” the meaning of which is “Good Land, Sweet Land.” In fact, the fertile soil and mild temperate due to the proximity of the lake are ideal for growing vines and producing quality wines.
Nature
Mountains and Valleys
Breathtaking views just a stone’s throw from the city: this is the main feature of Bergamo’s mountains. From the gentle hills around Bergamo to the 2,000-meter (8,000-foot) peaks of the troubled Alben ridge, to the splendid grandeur of the Arera group at 2,500 meters (8,500 feet) above the Valcanale and its fir-rich gorge dotted with ancient hamlets where the most genuinely alpine atmosphere can be felt.
And then the queens of the Orobie, with Pizzo dei Tre Signori, Il Corno Stella, and Pizzo del Becco on one side and on the other the great “Three Thousanders,” Pizzo di Coca, Redorta, and Scais, with trails and lakes and paths among pastures, scree, and rocks whose excitement is difficult to describe.
Ski lifts, ski slopes, Nordic ski trails, snowboarding, skating, bobsledding: this and much more is what Bergamo’s mountains have to offer in their winter guise.
San Pellegrino Terme

Lions Bergamo American Footbal Team
The Bergamo Lions were founded in 1983 by a group of enthusiasts and landed in the big leagues as early as the following year. After a period of growth on the field, the team began to consistently hold its own among the top positions in the league, culminating in 1993 in winning its first championship. But it was in 1998 that the Lions kicked off a winning streak that would lead them to the title of Italian Champions for ten consecutive years and allow them to set the European record for consecutive games won in a national championship. Between 1998 and 2006, they will be undefeated for a total of 73 matches, a record that to this day has not yet been broken by any European team. After winning the LeNAF/A2 championship in the 2011 season, the team returned in 2012 to the top Italian tournament, the IFL/A1. In the 2013 season, the Bergamo club decided to participate in the LeNAF/A2 championship by reaching the final, then lost to the Rome Grizzlies, before returning again to the IFL in the 2014 season..
